JPG to WebP,
smaller files for the web.
WebP is the format built for the modern web: at the same quality it usually squeezes a JPG into fewer bytes, which means faster pages and lighter storage. The trade is reach — WebP opens in current software, not ancient software. This converts your JPGs to WebP inside the page, on your machine, with nothing uploaded.
The short version
If a file is bound for a website, a fast-loading gallery, or just storage where every megabyte counts, WebP is a smart move. At a matched quality it usually beats JPG on size — sometimes by a lot, sometimes only a little, depending on the picture — and it supports transparency that JPG never could.
The one thing to weigh: modern software only. Today's browsers and image apps read WebP happily, but some older desktop tools and a few upload forms still don't. If the file needs to open on something ancient, JPG is the safer format and WebP isn't worth the risk.
Convert JPG to WebP now
Opens with WebP already chosen under "Save as". Free, no account, no daily cap. Nothing uploads — the ledger shows the exact bytes saved per file.
Convert a JPG to WebP in three steps
- Open the converter. The button above lands on the tool with WebP already selected under "Save as".
- Add your JPGs. Drop, paste, or choose a folder. Read into the tab, never uploaded.
- Save the WebP files. Each is re-encoded on your device — save individually or as one zip.
When JPG to WebP pays off
- Images for a website. Smaller files at the same quality mean pages that load faster and cost less bandwidth. This is WebP's home turf.
- Bulk storage. A folder of WebPs takes noticeably less room than the same folder of JPGs, with no visible quality drop at sensible settings.
- Anything staying inside modern tools. If everything that will ever open the file is recent, there's little reason not to take the saving.
The honest caveats
- WebP can't un-lose what the JPG dropped. Your JPG already threw away detail when it was first saved. Converting to WebP makes a smaller copy of that picture, not a sharper one — no format recovers detail that's gone.
- Two lossy hops. JPG is lossy and WebP is lossy, so this is a second round of compression. At the default quality it's invisible; if the source JPG was already rough, nudge the quality slider up to avoid stacking artefacts.
- Not every program opens WebP. That's the whole trade. Keep a JPG copy for anyone on older software, or convert back to JPG when you need maximum compatibility.
- Nothing uploads, and you can check it. Watch the Network tab, or switch off your Wi-Fi and convert anyway. EXIF metadata is dropped in the re-encode; rotation is applied so images stay upright.
Questions people actually ask
- How much smaller will the WebP be?
- It depends entirely on the image, so we won't promise a number. At a matched quality WebP usually wins, sometimes by a wide margin. The tool measures the real bytes for your file — and if a re-encode would be larger, it keeps your original.
- Will everyone be able to open a WebP?
- Every current browser and most modern image apps, yes. Some older desktop software still can't. If that's a risk, stick with JPG for that particular file.
- Is JPG to WebP free, with no limit?
- Yes — no account, no daily cap, no file limit. It runs on your device, so a whole folder at once is normal.
- Does converting make the picture look worse?
- Not at the default quality on a normal photo. Because both formats are lossy, re-encoding a very compressed JPG can add faint artefacts — raise the quality slider if you're worried.
- Are my files uploaded?
- No. Turn off your Wi-Fi and convert one; it works, because the whole thing runs in this page and there's nowhere to send anything.
